Keel: 1984 - Lay down the law

Keel fue fundada en 1983, por el vocalista de Steeler, Ron Keel, luego de haber tenido unas malas audiciones para Black Sabbath. Los demás miembros fueron el guitarrista David Michael Phillips (Icon), Marc Ferrari guitarra rítmica, Bobby Marks tras la batería y Kenny Chaisson, en el bajo. Al pasar unos meses, Phillips deja la banda para formar parte de King Kobra, siendo reemplazado por Bryan Jay. Ésta fue la alineación para su primer disco, en 1984, titulado Lay down the law. Después de la publicación, Bobby Marks fue reemplazado por Steve Riley.
En 1987, el tema Rock 'n' roll outlaw, apareció en el soundtrack de la película Dudes.

Keel: 1985 - The right to rock

Riley deja la banda, al empezar las grabaciones del segundo disco de la banda, para ser parte de W.A.S.P., siendo reemplazado por Dwain Miller. Ésta formación se mantendría por unos 4 años. Éste disco, capturó la mirada de Gene Simmons (KISS), lo cual no me parece raro, ya que el disco tiene un estilo muy "Simmons".

Keel: 1986 - The final frontier

Éste disco fue producido por Gene Simmons e incluye el tema Because the night, canción que fue co-escrita por Patti Smith y Bruce Springsteen y había sido un hit para Smith en 1978.
En 1986, Keel ganó el premio a la mejor banda del año en la revista Metal Edge, por encima de bandas como Iron maiden y Judas priest.

Keel: 1987 - Keel

Una canción del disco (que no se publicó en él), Proud to be loud, fue tomada por Pantera, éste tema aparece en el disco Power metal, en 1988.

Ferrari y Jay both dejan la banda en 1988, después de la gira del disco Keel. Fueron reemplazados por Scott Warren y Tony Palamucci.
